چکیده

Modified electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is most often a day care procedure and requires an induction agent with a rapid onset and emergence. At the same time it should not increase the seizure threshold, or decrease the duration of seizures because the clinical outcome of ECT depends on the duration of seizures. Methohexital seems to be the gold standard [1] for induction of general anaesthesia in electroconvulsive therapy. As it is not freely available for clinical use, propofol has now taken its place as the most commonly used induction agent for ECT. So, there are several studies put forth to find out if any other ABSTRACT

Sevoflurane versus propofol for electroconvulsive therapy: effects on seizure parameters, anesthesia recovery, and the bispectral index.

BACKGROUND/AIM In this prospective randomized cross-over study we compare the effects of sevoflurane versus propofol for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) anesthesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty four patients (ASA I-III, 18-65 years old) receiving ECT three times per week were included. Anesthesia was induced with either propofol (0.75 mg/kg iv) or 5% sevoflurane in 100% oxygen. Consecutive EC...

Comparison of the haemodynamic effects and seizure activity during modified ECT with thiopentone and propofol used as inducing agents

––Electroconvulsive therapy is also known as Electroshock or Shock therapy or Electroplex. Seizure activity produced by ECT is considered as the therapeutic aspect of this form of treatment, but is accompanied by untoward physiologic consequences, mainly cardiovascular and cerebral in nature. The hemodynamic effects can have a significant impact in patients with underlying cardiovascular diseas...

Effectiveness of sodium thiopentone, propofol, and etomidate as an ideal intravenous anesthetic agent for modified electroconvulsive therapy

INTRODUCTION Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in patients for therapeutic effects. ECT can produce severe disturbances in the cardiovascular system and a marked increase in cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure. These cardiovascular changes may be altered using various anesthetic drugs. AIM AND OBJEC...

Comparison of Inhalational Vital Capacity Induction with Sevoflurane to Intravenous Induction with Propofol for Insertion of Laryngeal Mask Airway in Adults: A Randomized Study

Background Since the development of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) by Dr. Brain, it is extensively used for airway management; satisfactory insertion of LMA requires administration of an induction agent and suppression of airway reflexes. Among intravenous agents, propofol has been the drug of choice in view of better safety profile, relaxation and depression of upper airway reflexes. Sevoflurane ...

Inhalation induction with sevoflurane: a double-blind comparison with propofol.

We conducted a randomized, double-blind comparison of 8% sevoflurane and propofol as induction agents for day-case cystoscopy in 102 patients. All patients received an i.v. cannula and breathed oxygen 5 litre min-1. Anaesthesia was induced with propofol i.v. or inhalation of 8% sevoflurane and 10% Intralipid (as a placebo) i.v., delivered by a blinded observer. Anaesthesia was maintained in all...
